What are CNC Machines used for?

CNC (Computer Numerical Control) is a technology where computers control the movements of machines. This technology is used in the manufacturing industry. The first CNC Machines were developed around 1940 using a common telecommunication data storage technology called “punched tape”, and quickly transitioned to analog then digital computer processing in the 1960s. Widespread use of these machines grew fast due to its ability to produce high quality work in large quantities. There are several types of CNC Machines, ranging from lathe centers, shaping machines, vertical millers and more. CNC machines can be used in many different ways, here are some of its many uses:

  • Constructing parts – Everything ranging from parts of automobiles, aerospace equipment, machine parts and other products can be made using a CNC machine. With the ability to make precise cuts, CNC machines can help mass produce precision parts to be used in about any industry.
  • Computer Integrated Manufacturing – CNC machines help save thousands of hours of manual programming, thus increasing productivity. They can be programmed in specific ways according to instructions which can eliminate human errors, while saving time and money.
  • Wood working – CNC machines are also used in the wood working industry for various operations like “routing” (similar to milling) and drilling. There are also CNC machines that are used in lettering and engraving, while some are used for the electrical industry such as CNC Coil Winders and soldering machines.
