Comparing Different Types of CNC Machines

Since CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machines are broadly used in the manufacturing industry, it also plays an important role in the manufacturing industry. It uses CAD (Computer-Aided Design) and CAM (Computer-Aided Manufacturing) software to enable users to create wealth for both industrial and creative products. The types of CNC machines can be classified into the following categories based on different methods depending on the functions or types of machine parts.

Types of CNC Machines

  • CNC Milling Machine – One of the most common and widely recognized types of CNC machines featuring built-in tools for milling, shoulder milling, tapping, cutting, drilling, and turning. A CNC milling machine can have a wide array of functions. Materials are set inside the processing CNC machine after which the PC will control the devices to penetrate or cut them. Milling machines can translate specific programs of numbers and letters to move the spindle in various ways.
  • CNC Plasma – A CNC Plasma cutter is the process of plasma cutting involving the cutting of a material using a plasma torch. Plasma-cutting CNC machines include a powerful light that is ready to slice through unpleasant materials like metal. With a CNC plasma cutter, gas is blown at a very high speed from a nozzle and an electrical arc forms through the gas coming out of the nozzle to the surface that is being cut. Electric welding yields temperatures of up to 10,000 degrees Fahrenheit and plasma lights accomplish temperatures of up to 50,000 degrees Fahrenheit. In comparison with the traditional metal cutting implementation, plasma cutters provide cleaner cuts and finishes. It is perfect for cutting through sheet metal, metal plates, bolts, and pipes, amongst many other metals.
  • CNC lathe machine – It is characterized by the ability to rotate materials while in operation. These lathes can make precise cuts quickly by using various tools. CNC lathe machines are quite effective in the precision they offer compared to manual lathes. They also usually have fewer numbers axes than milling CNC machines, making them smaller and more compact. Both routers and milling machines involve a moving tool cutting down a stationary part while CNC lathes have the opposite principle, it rotates the workplace against a stationary cutting tool. CNC lathes are used for creating cylindrical, spherical, or dome pieces.
  • CNC Laser-cutting machine – Not to be mistaken for plasma-cutting CNC machines, laser-cutting CNC machines are intended to cut through intense materials. Lasers tend to offer a higher level of cutting accuracy though they’re not quite as strong as plasma torches. CNC Laser-cutting CNC machines for the most part utilize one of the three sorts of lasers: CO2, neodymium (Nd), or yttrium-aluminum-garnet. It is mostly used for cutting and great when it comes to cutting metals, plastics, or hardwood. Depending on the density and strength of the material, the intensity of the laser can be adjusted. It is also more precise and uses less energy than plasma cutters when cutting through sheets of steel or aluminum. But the disadvantage of the laser cutters is that unlike plasma cutters that can cut through materials of different thickness, laser cutters are not as well as not suited to cutting through thicker metal.
  • CNC EDM (Electric Discharge Machine) – Electric discharge CNC machines, also known as a spark/flash CNC machine, is a special type of CNC machine that uses electrical sparks to manipulate materials into the desired shape. The electrical release has an erosive impact, which means it can distort materials to which is uncovered. The material is removed from a specific workpiece by a series of recurring electrical discharges between two electrodes. These electrodes are separated by a dielectric fluid, which often receives an electric voltage. Electric discharge machines take advantage of this by producing controlled sparks to reshape materials.
